Teaching Phonics in MFL - Workshop Recording

The MFL GCSE (2026) explicitly tests students’ understanding of Sound-Symbol Correspondence. If you are confused about what that means, then you need to watch this workshop recording!

During this one-hour workshop, I gave an overview of how I include phonics and SSC into my own lesson planning and resources, including:

  • What is SSC and why is it so important?
  • How to start embedding phonics in MFL lessons from the start of KS3 (or even KS2).
  • Some great activities to introduce and practise different sounds and spellings.
  • Advice on how much to correct students’ pronunciation – focusing on not demotivating students while still ensuring they can make themselves understood.
