What does it mean to scale a business?

Mar 07, 2026

You may have heard terms "growing" and "scaling" used when it comes to building a business, perhaps even interchangeably. Maybe you've wondered whether there is a difference between them, and if so, what that difference actually is?

As far as I'm concerned, there are some huge differences between "growing" a business, particularly if you rely on 1-2-1 clients, and truly "scaling" it with sustainable one-to-many offers:

1. Growing a business can mean filling your calendar with 1-2-1 clients (tutoring, mentoring, bespoke CPD, etc), until you reach a point where there are no more hours left in the day for more clients. On the other hand, scaling involves creating some one-to-many offers that leave space in your diary, and more time for fun!

2. When you are growing a business, especially with 1-2-1 clients, you earn more money for every hour you work. It's a simple equation: more hours = more money. However, scaling a business means earning more money without working more hours.

3. Growing a business with 1-2-1 clients means capping your income when you get to capacity. Teaching 27 lessons a week @£40/hour for 40 weeks of the year might earn you the same as a full time teacher (roughly £43k/year), but there is little room to earn any more than that. Scaling your business with one-to-many offers actually means your income potential is unlimited! Having a subscription with 10 members is the same amount of work as a subscription with 50 members, but obviously the 50 members bring in 5 times more income!

This Sunday (8th March 2026), I'm hosting an updated version of my FREE webinar "Increase your income in your education business" and I'd love to see you there! It's at 8pm on Zoom, and I won't be recording this one, because I really believe that to make the most of these kinds of trainings, you need to be in the room. There will be time to ask questions and have a discussion about the 5 ways I have scaled my own business over the past 9 years, and I can't wait to dive into it with you.
