To textbook or not at KS3?
I was asked this question for a Q&A episode of the Kate Languages Podcast. Here is a brief summary of my thoughts - for more detail, listen to the episode in full here.
- Use textbooks as your framework. Treat your textbook as the bones of your scheme of work, not a rigid script. It provides structured progression of language concepts while giving you the freedom to adapt pace and add creative elements.
- Exploit the listening resources. Quality listening materials are really hard to create from scratch. Textbooks provide carefully crafted resources that match your students' level and complement their learning. Use these ready-made materials to develop authentic listening skills.
- Embrace the spiral. Textbooks use a 'spiral' curriculum design, gradually building on previous learning with regular retrieval practice. This structured approach to revisiting and expanding topics ensures effective language acquisition.
- Build out from the core content. Use textbook texts as springboards for your lessons. Add your own scaffolding, games, and creative activities to bring the language to life. Let the textbook provide core content while you make it engaging.
- Make the most of ready-made assessment materials. Take advantage of differentiated assessments and vocabulary lists included in textbooks. These time-saving resources ensure you're testing appropriate content at the right level, while allowing for customisation to suit your needs.
In my opinion, using textbooks isn't 'cheating' - it's about working smarter, not harder. They provide a reliable foundation that you can build upon, allowing you to focus your energy on personalising content and supporting your students' individual needs.
