5 MFL ECT Tips for New French, German & Spanish Teachers
Jun 24, 2026
Starting your first year as an MFL teacher? These practical Early Career Teacher (ECT) tips will help new French, German and Spanish teachers prepare for September, build confidence in the classroom and start the school year feeling more organised and less overwhelmed.
For this post, I asked Kirsten (aka @themflteacher) to share her best advice for MFL ECTs. She’s set up a free community for MFL teachers and regularly shares practical tips and advice for both new and more experienced teachers. Here are 5 top tips for MFL ECTs to help you prepare for September without panicking!
- Get organised before the chaos begins.
Before September arrives, spend a little time setting up the systems that'll save your sanity later. You'll thank yourself by Week 3! - Get to know your school before day one.
If you can, visit your school before the term starts. Familiarity breeds confidence, and confidence is everything in those first few weeks. - Build your target language toolkit.
As an MFL teacher, the target language is your superpower, but it can also feel daunting at first. You don't need to do everything at once; even a handful of consistent phrases will make a huge difference to your classroom culture from day one. - Stock up on ready-to-use resources.
You will not have time to create everything from scratch, and you absolutely shouldn't have to. - Find your people.
Teaching can feel lonely, especially when you're new. Seek out your fellow ECTs, in school and online. Having people who understand what you're going through makes an enormous difference.
As you start your MFL teaching journey, don't forget that you’re far more ready than you think. You will grow in confidence with every small step: every lesson you teach, every routine you build, every student you inspire.
You don’t need to be perfect, you just need to be ready to learn and grow 😍
